Planning a wedding or event at the Downtown Market in Grand Rapids? Whether someone you love uses a wheelchair, needs a quiet place to reset, or simply moves a little slower these days, it helps to know what to expect before you arrive.
We toured the Downtown Market as photographers and disability advocates. This guide shares what we saw, with photos and short silent videos, so you can plan with confidence and know which questions to ask.
A quick note: we visited in winter, so snow covered parts of the parking lot and outdoor walkways. Some details, like pavement markings and curb cuts, weren’t easy to see. Confirming those with the venue is always a good idea.
Photos and videos: Hopelynd. Videos have no sound and are here for visual reference only.
The Downtown Market sits at 435 Ionia Ave SW, just south of downtown Grand Rapids. The indoor market hall with local vendors is on the main floor, and the event spaces are upstairs. According to the Downtown Market’s website, spaces for private events include:
Capacities and availability can change, so confirm current details with the Downtown Market’s events team.
We are photographers and disability advocates, not inspectors. Here is what we saw in each area on our visit. Where we couldn’t see something, we’ve listed questions to ask the venue.
What we found: The entrance we filmed is reached by a covered walkway along the building, with a handrail along the way, leading to glass double doors with automatic openers. Snow along the path hid curb cuts and surface details, so ask the venue about the smoothest route from parking. Inside, the event spaces we visited have open, level floors: hardwood in the Banquet Room and smooth flooring in the Greenhouse, with plenty of room to move between tables. An elevator connects the floors.

The Greenhouse is entered through a wide automatic sliding glass door. On the second floor, the walkway overlooking the market hall is wide, with tables and seating along the way.

Questions to ask the venue:
What we found: We photographed at least two accessible parking spaces in the Market’s lot. Snow covered the lot on our visit, so we couldn’t see pavement markings or count every space. There may be more that we didn’t capture.

Questions to ask the venue:
We didn’t see this area on our visit, so please ask the venue.
Questions to ask the venue:
What we found: The event room doors we saw have an “Assistive Listening Available” sign, which means a listening system is available for guests who are hard of hearing. The Greenhouse and the Banquet Room are filled with natural light through floor-to-ceiling glass. It is beautiful, and it can be very bright on a sunny day.

Questions to ask the venue:
We didn’t see this area on our visit, so please ask the venue.
Questions to ask the venue:
What we found: The room signs we saw include raised characters and braille, and the exits are clearly marked with lighted signs.
Questions to ask the venue:
For guests, the Downtown Market’s event spaces are open, level and easy to move through, with an elevator between floors and assistive listening available. It is a welcoming option for wheelchair users, guests who use walkers or canes, and guests who are hard of hearing.
For couples and wedding parties, the Greenhouse is the showpiece. Its flat, open floor makes it easy for everyone to move around, and the greenery and light make for beautiful photos. If the rooftop terrace is part of your plans for portraits, ask the venue about the doorway out to it first.

Best suited for: Wheelchair users · Guests who use mobility aids · Guests who are hard of hearing · Couples who love natural light and greenery
Worth discussing with the venue: Accessible parking and drop-off · Access to the rooftop terrace · Restrooms and companion care
We visited the Downtown Market because we believe every couple deserves to start planning with real information, not vague assurances.
The Downtown Market is a bright, open space where much of what matters for access is already in place. A few details, like parking and restrooms, are worth confirming directly with the venue. We always recommend that step, for any venue.
Ask the questions early. The right venue will meet you where you are, and the right photographer will make sure no one is left out of the story.
If you’re planning a wedding and want a photographer who genuinely understands accessibility, who will prepare for your needs, ask the right questions, and make sure no one in your family is left out of the frame, we’d love to work with you. You can see how we prepare for sessions here.
If you are part of the disability community and have visited the Downtown Market or any venue we have reviewed, we want to hear from you. Your firsthand experience helps us give future couples the most complete picture possible. Reach out to us at info@hopelynd.com.
